At Beever Primary school we follow the Inspire Maths approach. ‘Inspire Maths’ is the UK version of the number one series used to teach Mathematics in Singapore (a country globally recognised for Mathematics teaching and learning) – it is a high quality text book programme for pupils in Years One through to Six that enables pupils to achieve mastery standard. Teaching for mastery is central to the Inspire Maths approach. High-quality Pupil Textbooks introduce concepts in a cumulative and highly scaffolded way, enabling all children to become confident mathematicians. The series ensures teachers provide pupils with plenty of opportunities to explore Mathematics practically using a variety of resources. The concrete – pictorial (part whole and bar model) – abstract approach ensures depth of understanding of mathematical concepts with problem solving embedded throughout.

Inspire Maths advocates beginning units of work with concrete activity and using it throughout units to enhance learning. Assessment opportunities throughout ensure that children receive rapid, appropriate intervention, so they progress with their peers and do not fall behind. Inspire Maths focuses on developing problem-solving skills, leading children to become confident and efficient problem solvers, which is critical for success at school and later in the work place. This learning framework, with problem solving at its heart, builds on the development of skills, concepts and processes alongside positive and robust attitudes and metacognition in order to achieve the core goal of deep conceptual understanding.
